This book is an unforgettable piece of writing. It is written by Viktor Frankl, a concentration camp survivor, psychiatrist, and founder of logotherapy. In a clear, authentic voice, he quickly entrains the reader into the reality of the camps; the hierarchies, the facts, and the will to live that will allow humans to endure and participate in almost anything. Yet with the iniquity, he also writes of the few who shone- who cared for others, who did not abandon spiritual principles. This unique first-person account is unforgettable because of his bravery, intellectual approach, and clear-headed ability to recount details. Dr. Frankl also shares the core principles behind his innovative approach to psychotherapy. We are all searching for meaning; reading this book will allow you to look at life in a new way, and you will be changed forever—a life-changing and extraordinary book.

Book Description:

Now in its 60th year, this book by the famous Viennese psychiatrist is still one of the best-selling books of all time.

Viktor E. Frankl, a psychiatrist known worldwide, spent years in Nazi death camps, where he saw things that couldn’t be described. During his suffering, and partly because of it, Dr. Frankl came up with a new way to help people: “logotherapy.” His theory is based on the idea that the main thing that drives people is their search for meaning.

In the New York Times in 1997, Dr. Frankl’s obituary was called “an enduring work of survival literature.” Man’s Search for Meaning is more than just the story of Viktor E. Frankl’s triumph; it is a remarkable blend of science and humanism and “a compelling introduction to the most important psychological movement of our day” (Gordon W. Allport).

Amazon.com Review

Since Freud, Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl has been one of the essential pieces of psychiatric writing. The book starts with a long, profound, and very moving personal essay about Frankl’s five years in Auschwitz and other concentration camps and how hard it was for him to find reasons to keep living. In the second part of the book, “Logotherapy in a Nutshell,” Frankl talks about the psychotherapy method he came up with during his time in the concentration camps. Frankl, on the other hand, thinks that man’s deepest desire is to search for meaning and purpose. Freud believed that sexual instincts and urges were what drove people. So, Frankl’s logotherapy fits in with Western religions much better than Freudian psychotherapy. This book is fascinating, innovative, and full of people. Frankl’s personal and professional writings sometimes come together in a way that has a lot of power. Frankl writes, “Our generation is realistic because we have come to know the man as he is.” “After all, man is the one who came up with the gas chambers at Auschwitz. He also went into those gas chambers standing up and saying the Lord’s Prayer or the Shema Yisrael.”
