PREFACE TO SECOND EDITION
The primary version of this e book was effectively obtained by many throughout the business, together with contractors and in addition proved very helpful to college students and newly-qualified graduates. Nonetheless the development business has moved on and this second version will assist to maintain tempo with that advance. Two new chapters coping with the subjects of glass and occupational well being have been added. The well being and security chapter has been fully recast to recogn- ise adjustments in laws; specifically the up to date Building [Design & Management] Regulation Rev 2007 which now locations extra accountability with the shopper. As well as a bit has been added masking the administration of demolition initiatives.
All different chapters have been reviewed and revised to differing extents, as acceptable. I’m grateful to former and new authors for his or her work and in addition to Dr Keith Whittles and Linsey Gullon at Whittles Publishing for his or her encouragement in bringing this e book to press. Our business is on the forefront of redevelopment and may boast of some spectacular achievements. Nonetheless a current report that 30% of contracts require remedial wok earlier than contract completion suggests there may be room for enchancment. I subsequently commend this e book to practitioners and others as an support of their battle to realize higher requirements.
David Doran and I have been longstanding colleagues, having fun with in depth and profitable careers throughout the Worldwide Building Firm, George Wimpey plc. I used to be, subsequently, accustomed to the early prototype of the Site Engineers Manual launched into GW plc and witnessed the constructive response from engineers in any respect ranges throughout the firm to what grew to become a necessary aide-memoire and reference e book for a typical web site engineer. Due to this fact, when David requested me if I’d write the Foreword for his up to date and trendy model, I readily agreed. The function and obligations of the location engineer are, as in all professions, ever altering: at the moment’s engineer must be IT literate, to grasp the interdependency of different professions throughout the constructed setting, and to maintain his or her competencies updated and related.
The idea of lifelong studying is actual and I consider important to at the moment’s profitable engineer. The manufacturing of this guide attracts on the important procedures and recommendation crucial for the profitable execution of initiatives, each massive and small, and is extensive ranging in its reference. Its contributors are knowledgeable of their respective fi elds, their information honed by each tutorial and sensible expertise, is written in plain English and is pragmatic in its recommendation. As a transparent e book of reference, an aide-memoire to crucial process, it’s, in my view, a should have for each engineer’s desk or pocket and I’m delighted to commend it to you.
