The story is told through the close friendship between Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. This friendship strengthened both men until 1912, when they got into a brutal fight for the presidential nomination that split their wives, children, and closest friends, hurt the progressive wing of the Republican Party, made Woodrow Wilson president, and changed the country’s history.
The Bully Pulpit is also the story of the muckraking press. It helps Roosevelt get the government to stop letting robber barons, corrupt politicians, and corporations that take advantage of our natural resources do what they want. Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, Lincoln Steffens, and William Allen White, the best group of journalists ever put together in one magazine, tell the story of the muckrakers. They worked together under the mercurial genius of publisher S. S. McClure.
Goodwin’s story is based on a lot of firsthand information. Roosevelt and Taft write more than 400 letters to each other. It starts when they are both in their early thirties and ends just a few months before Roosevelt dies. Edith Roosevelt and Nellie Taft kept diaries. The muckrakers sent each other hundreds of letters, kept journals and wrote their own autobiographies. Captain Archie Butt was a personal assistant to both Roosevelt and Taft. His letters give us a close look at both men.
Like Goodwin’s other excellent books about the Civil War and World War II, The Bully Pulpit shows how well she can combine academic rigor with an easy-to-read style. It is an essential piece of history because it looks at how leaders acted during a rare time of activism and change that brought the country closer to its original goals.
