Precast Concrete Structures by Kim S. Elliott
PREFACE to Precast Concrete Structures by Kim S. Elliott:
In 1990, the chairman of the British Precast Concrete Federation (BPCF), Mr Geoff Brigginshaw, requested me what degree of educating was carried out in British universities in precast concrete building for multistorey buildings.
The reply, after all, was little or no, and stays that manner at the moment regardless of appreciable efforts by the BPCF and sections of the career to broadcast the deserves, and pitfalls of precast concrete constructions.
Having given lectures at about 25 UK universities on this topic, I estimate that lower than 5 per cent of our civil/structural engineering graduates find out about precast concrete, and fewer than this have an honest grounding within the design of precast concrete constructions.
Why is that this? The precast concrete trade instructions about 25 per cent of the multi-storey business and home constructing market if frames, flooring and cladding (facades) are all included.
In larger schooling (one step away from the market), precast schooling instructions between zero and (about) 5 per cent of the structural engineering curriculum. This in flip represents solely about 1/8 of a civil engineering course.
The 5 per cent determine claimed above might certainly be an over estimate. The explanations are two-fold:
1. British lectures are holistic in the direction of structural engineering.
2. British lectures don’t have any data on this topic.
This Precast Concrete Structures by Kim S. Elliott guide goals to unravel these strategies concurrently. Suggestion no. 2 is extra readily solved. This Precast Concrete Structures by Kim S. Elliott guide is, sadly, certainly one of only a few textual content books on this topic space geared toward college students at a degree which they’ll assimilate of their general structural engineering studying course of.
It does this by contemplating design each on the macro and micro ranges – world points comparable to structural stability, constructing motion and robustness are dissected and analysed right down to the extent of detailed joints, localized stress concentrations and bolts and welds sizes.
